Caramelised
Sugar
This versatile range of products is produced by a controlled heating
process of sugar or a mixture of sugars, with no additives, making
them natural flavouring agents. Labelled as ‘caramelised sugar’ or ‘burnt
sugar’, it is considered a food rather than an additive.
 New
to the range is a dark, highly acid-stable syrup,
with a rounded, less bitter flavour profile than
other dark caramelised sugar grades. 80/600-01
is suitable for use in energy drinks, cola, ginger
beer, juice based drinks, bakery fillings and
the spirit industry.
Other popular uses for caramelised sugar are in baked products, where
it enhances nut, chocolate and mocha flavour profiles, and ice cream
and dairy products.
At the recommended dosages for flavour enhancement, they give a golden
colour that is useful in low sugar baked products, dairy products and
ice cream where a caramel or “baked” colour and flavour is desired.
In beer and spirits, caramelised sugar rounds off the flavour profile
and enhances colour.
Caramelised sugar comes in both syrup and powder formats, and organic
grades are now also available.

Transfer of FMC Alginate
Distribution
Since 1999 Hawkins Watts Ltd has successfully worked in close partnership
with Norpro NZ Ltd to distribute alginates in NZ. However, following
the recent acquisition of ISP Alginates by FMC BioPolymer USA, HWL
has been asked to assume sole responsibility for local alginate distribution.
This transfer occurred as of the 2 March 2009.
Both Norpro and HWL have been working through the transition process
to ensure there is no disruption to customer service or supply.
All product specifications and orders will remain unchanged. All stock
on hand was transferred to HWL before 2nd March 2009, to ensure the
deliveries would not be affected.

New
Stevia Supplier
We are pleased to advise that we now represent the Dae Pyung
Co Ltd Stevia range of natural sweeteners, in both New Zealand
and Australia.
 With
increased interest in Steviol Glycosides following their approval by
FSANZ In 2008, the Dae Pyung natural sweeteners offer clean taste profiles
and less bitter and liquorice-like aftertastes.
Based in South Korea, Dae Pyung have had many years of application
experience with Stevia extracts and manufacture Rebaudioside A, a purified
extract of approximately 400x sweetness of sucrose and comparatively
less ‘off taste’.
Based on trends overseas, we expect Reb A to be the preferred natural
sweetener in a range of beverages, fruit preps and dairy products.
