April 2008

We are growing . . .

Hawkins Watts Ltd acquired the food ingredient division of Robert Importers Ltd, in December 2007.
Our portfolio has expanded to incorporate: Amedeo Giovanni (Italy), who specialise in the manufacture of citrus oils; Colloides Naturels Inc (France), the world’s largest manufacturer and supplier of Gum Acacia; and Lionel Hitchen (Essential Oils) Ltd (UK), Europe’s largest manufacturer of oleoresins and spice extracts, with some of the office favourites being: thyme, rosemary, roast garlic and a very special roasted cumin.

Graeme NealieWe are also thrilled to welcome Graeme Nealie to the team. Graeme brings with him a wealth of experience in the flavours and aromatics area.

Our next Hawkins Watts New Zealand Training Seminar, which will be ‘Oleoresins and Oils for Beginners’, due around June/July 2008. These events have proved to be very popular indeed.

Changing of the guard . . .

Tonia DuffIt is with great sadness, that we say goodbye to our Customer Services Manager, Tonia Duff, who will be moving to Hawke’s Bay (a.k.a. Greener Pastures) at the end of May 2008.

Tonia has been an integral part and valued member of our team; making our order processing systems hassle free. We would like to sincerely thank Tonia, for her contribution and wish her much luck in her future endeavours. We have no doubt that she will be an asset wherever she goes.

Tonia, we will miss you!
Newest recruits:

Anabelle Boret Anabelle Boret is a key member of our quality and technical team, and has a MSc in Biochemistry from Nantes, France.

Jessica BrownJessica Brown is our new receptionist and most likely the first person you’ll talk to if you phone or visit Hawkins Watts Ltd. She is studying part-time at Manukau Institute of Technology.

Flower to the Flavour

Hawkins Watts New Zealand hosted another customer seminar on the 4 December 2007, as part of our ongoing technical training series, this time the topic was Vanilla.

HWL Vanilla Training Seminar

Seminar presenters were Natasha Sabatier of Hawkins Watts New Zealand, and Wolfgang Kadow, Symrise’s
Regional Flavourist.

The presentation covered many aspects of Vanilla - from where and how to grow this labour intensive crop; processing, curing and extraction; consumer perceptions and associations to the world’s most popular flavour; descriptor training using aroma chemical; and tastings of various flavours and their application in food products.

If you are interested in obtaining a copy of the presentation and Vanilla Toolkit of samples, please email Natasha@hawkinswatts.com
